Jerry Joinson
Jerry ran his first race when he was 9 years old with his pet German Shepherd, back in 1951. From there, Jerry moved on to 3 Yukon Quest finishes. He has raced here numerous times and we are glad to have him back in the Fort. Jerry discovered his love of dogs and mushing as a kid growing up in Cumberland House, Sask. The dogs have been an important part of his life ever since. He now works as a summer dogsled tour guide enabling him to work with dogs year round.

Our team for this race, as our 27-dog kennel, will be roughly half AKC-registered Siberian Huskies from Tumnatki, Tsuga & North Wapiti bloodlines, and the balance Seppala-Chukchi Dog out crosses. Some young, some not so young. Our dogs have completed a number of of 200 and 300mile races in Canada & Alaska. Born in sunny South-Africa, my mum told me stories of the frozen North, and eventually I made it up here and now live in Whitehorse with my partner/kennel-manager Gwen. As most other mushers, small communities and countries we are simply trying to survive and make sense of the current 'pandemic era', and from that perspective we extend our deepest respect to the folks in Fort St James for their courage to host this event. Particularly happy to see Craig passing the 200-miler baton to Sean in his ongoing development as a fine young musher. We think the future of the sport is quickly shifting to smaller kennels and mid- rather than super long distance races, and the Canadian sleddog racing circuit presents some of the best events.

I grew up in Yellowknife NT where my love of dog sledding was born. I then got hooked on racing when I traveled to Whitehorse for College. I took a Environmental Science course and trained sled dogs, a perfect match. Not the typical student life but I enjoyed it. Every year I entered more challenging races until I fulfilled my dream, running in the Yukon Quest. This season is unlike any other and I am using it as a opportunity to travel to races that I would normally not enter in. The Quest cancellation this year opened up this opportunity and I am looking forward to this new adventure.

My dogs, family and I are out of Germansen Landing, where we have a small kennel of about 20 dogs. I am 16 and have been running dogs for 3 years. I had a blast in last years classic running the 100 mile. Now, looking to lengthen my time in Fort st. James, and see more miles, I will be back! I love the Fort, the race and the great community, it all helped get me started into a lifetime with the dogs!

I'm from Fort St john BC . My dad is the one that got me hooked on dog mushing. Without him I wouldn't be here today . I've been running dogs since I was 9 . My first race was a 6 dog sprint race at Caledonia classics when I was 12 . From there on I've been waist deep and the love of mushing grows every year . From there I've done tons of different races that Caledonia has offered. This is where I started and have grown up it's practically and a yearly family reunion for me . This will always be my favorite race weekend .

When I was 8, I put on our house dog, a big St-Bernard !!! Then, one day, I saw a team of several dogs, and that's when I realized that I wanted to harness more dogs. As a teenager, I was doing sprint races and it was only in 1996 that I actually started doing long distance races, racing from 60 miles to 400 miles races in the same year, the Labrador 400. I climbed the ladder and I started winning the Can Am Crown 250 (Fort Kent, Maine) in 1998, then in 2019, I won it for the 10th time, six in a row. I did the race circuit in North East North America, but in 2003 I realized one of my dream by running the Yukon Quest (1000 miles), where I placed 6th. I won the Hudson Bay Quest in Manitoba (220 miles) twice and I placed 2nd at UP200 in Michigan many times. When I was a teenager, I saw a video from Iditarod and from that moment I dreamed of bringing my sled dogs to such an atletic level to be able to run that famous race the right way. What I like most about dog sledding is to be in the nature, discover new territories and especially to listen to my dogs and to see that we are an amaising team between human and the beast.

Marcel Marin
Founder and owner of Underdog Kennels. Marcel was basically born on the back of a dog team. Dogs are his life (not a hobby).
Since childhood traveling, hunting and trapping on the tundra and eventually stepping into racing. From 1 dog races to the Yukon Quest, Marcel has raced it all and always staying true to owning a small kennel of never having over 10 dogs. We found our passion in racing tough mid-distance races, winning the Canadian Challenge twice and the Underdog 3 times; and last year (his favorite race) The Caledonia Classic 7-dog 100 miles. Dogs are my life.

Jody Verge
Jody has a whole variety of dogs at her place, everything from Chihuauhas to pit bulls to really well line-bred Alaskan Huskies that she got from Craig. If her truck gets here, we're hoping she brings the Alaskans to race. This year, Jody has become more serious and hired international handlers from Germany. She's fully expecting to win the race, with or without her sled.

Being with my kids and taking them on adventures, fishing, trapping and being with the dogs is basically all I do. Living in Germansen, for the past 10 years with my family, we started a kennel, and have been working with the dogs, and keeping busy for the past 3 years. We always have a blast at the Fort St James races, and look forward to running my first 100 miler!

I've been running dogs for many years and have loved pretty much every mile of it. I love to come to the races because it's at the races that the learning curve gets pushed....even after 27 years. It's a venue to watch my dogs shine, and a great social time where mushers can get together and support each other in our addiction. I love Ft. St. James and the Caledonia Classic and it's going to be fantastic to be back on these trails.

Brenham Wong
Originally from Bozeman Montana, Brenham has found a love for a second home and now resides in the Calgary area. When Brenham was 19 years old, while attending university, he got his hands on a wolfdog, who he named Zelda. She quickly pushed his limits and took up the majority of his time. Over his years with Zelda, his dedication with her led to many opportunities such as studying wolves in Yellowstone National Park, rehabbing wolves and wolfdogs in Alberta, as well as working with animals in films recognized all over the world. Brenham has always been drawn to northern dogs, and he embraces a natural relationship with them through outdoor activity. Now he finds himself in his first race as a musher representing Atka Kennel.

I got into kicksledding with my Whippet, Afghan Hound, and Borzoi about 4 years ago but quickly found out they will only go so far with only the perfect weather conditions. So I thought I would get one sled dog that I could go with, and now I have 8 and a real sled. I went to Barkerville last year for my first race and was hooked. I’m looking forward to going to Fort St. James for the sprint races and hope to do the 100 mile race in the future!

I maintain a small kennel which I train regularly and share racing and events with my granddaughter Ann Doreen Douglas. For years I have been a regular at any sprint races within reasonable driving distance and on the Gold Rush Mail Run. I prefer stage racing (daily 75 km) to the distance racing that requires running the dogs at night while making my own coffee on the trail! We are very lucky to have the Caledonia Classic as a racing event we can count on. Well organized and amazing volunteers!!

Karen has been an invaluable volunteer at Dog Power Adventures for over 10 years. The dogs know her as their favorite "Auntie Cookie" as she keeps them supplied with treats, toys and veggie stew (that is added to their raw diet). The postal slogan has nothing on Karen, as 3 days a week she travels through snow, sleet, hail, rain, and sometimes even mud for 30 minutes to help care for the Siberian Huskies, Canadian Inuit Dogs, and assorted house dogs. Her love for the dogs always shines through!
